Thunder in a Sweetgum Tree
(Warning: Non-Cosy story, from photo prompt by L.G. Wells and Mina Howell.)
It was nearly 100 years since the light-bearer imprisoned the giant Thunderbeard in the old sweetgum tree. One hundred years of struggling to break through a dense wooden core.
Ninety years ago, he finally reached bitter life-giving sap that now flowed through his veins. Mosses, lichens, and gall balls sprang out overnight, as he reacted with renewed vigor.
More quickly now, he was gaining a foothold, quite literally, as one could see if they but looked. First one toe, then another, and another broke through with a crunching pop, still enclosed in sweetgum bark, but flowing with life and a promise of revenge.
An elbow was nearly through. The children didn’t know it, as they played below, laughing, gathering sweetgum balls to toss at each other. Occasionally, one would climb into the waiting branches. Leaves shook, as Thunderbeard would shudder with desire and anticipation.
Once free, the elbow, with a flexible joint, would enable his leafy fingers to snatch up a child, smother it neatly in leaves, and finally Thunderbeard could feast on real sustenance.
Then, his prison would hold him no more. With proper nourishment, he’d break free with a brilliant flash of lightning and fire. Thunderbeard would rumble and roll, so all would know he was free.
For now, he was concentrating on his toes.
Ploop!
Ah, this one broke through wetly! A promising sign.

Sweetgum… yes! I have such fond memories of that.
I love this photo prompt! So very open ended!
Thanks for reading and responding!
Wow we all really had the same childhood experience, throwing sweet gum pods at each other 😂😂
This is such a cool story, I like the air of unease that seeps out of it!
